Living frugally isn’t about cutting back all the time, it’s about working with the seasons rather than against them. Each season brings different opportunities to save money, waste less, and live more simply. On an island, where prices and access can be a little different, being seasonal with spending really does make a difference.
Here’s how I try to keep things frugal throughout the year.
Spring – Reset and Refresh
Spring is perfect for using what you already have before buying anything new.
Frugal ideas:
Declutter before you shop – you’ll often find things you forgot you owned
Air-dry laundry instead of using the tumble dryer
Start a small herb garden from cuttings or seeds
Repair, patch, and refresh clothes instead of replacing them
Plan lighter meals to use up freezer and cupboard food
Spring is also a good time to review subscriptions and bills and cancel anything you no longer use.
Summer – Use Nature Instead of Energy
Summer is the cheapest season if you use it well.
Frugal ideas:
Dry washing outdoors for free
Eat more cold meals like salads and sandwiches to avoid using the oven
Use natural light instead of lamps
Batch cook in the evening when it’s cooler
Walk more and drive less when possible
Take advantage of free outdoor activities
If you grow anything, even herbs, use them heavily now to reduce food costs.
Autumn – Prepare for Winter
Autumn is all about planning ahead.
Frugal ideas:
Start a “winter cupboard” of tinned and dried foods
Buy warm clothing second-hand before prices rise
Batch cook soups and stews and freeze them
Draught-proof windows and doors using towels or fabric rolls
Sort blankets and extra layers before it gets cold
A little preparation here can save a lot later.
Winter – Stay Warm Without Overspending
Winter is when frugality really pays off.
Frugal ideas:
Layer clothing instead of turning the heating up
Use hot water bottles or microwave heat pads
Keep doors closed to trap warmth
Cook meals that warm the house (soups, stews, casseroles)
Drink more hot drinks to stay warm naturally
Use candles and soft lighting for cosy evenings instead of bright lights
Comfort doesn’t have to be expensive.
Why Seasonal Frugal Living Works
Seasonal living:
Reduces energy costs
Helps avoid panic spending
Encourages planning
Makes budgeting easier
Keeps life simple and intentional
Instead of trying to save money in the same way all year, adjusting with the seasons feels more natural.
Now a question for you dear readers.
Which season do you find easiest to save money in, and which do you struggle with most?
